The difference Between Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

If you are reading this article you must have come across
the two words “Virtual Reality” and “Augmented Reality”. I also came across
this problem few months back so I thought why not share my knowledge and solve
this problem of my readers.

Okay so Virtual Reality (In short it is also called VR)
means a virtual (Computer generated) environment created around you. This is
normally done by goggles or headsets. By this technology you are removed from
the real world and immersed in a virtual world. Then Augmented Reality (In
short AR) utilizes the real world around you and displays virtual objects in
the real world. Well that is the shortest method of explaining them. If you
still didn’t understand it clearly read on my friends.
Look at the pictures above closely for a
second. In the first picture do you see the old guys with “dad” name. That is a virtual object. The
girl is seeing that through the headset. What happens here is that the girl
chats with her “dad” on skype and the special thing is that the “dad” is in the
real and physical wall. That is called Augmented Reality. The next photo shows
a girl looking at a globe floating in the middle of the room. That is also augmented reality. So remember in augmented reality you can see the real world
and virtual objects float or appear in the real world. You can use Augmented reality by using
your smartphone (it must have camera), headsets and many devices which have a
camera as well as a video output medium.
You can watch the trailers of Microsoft hololens in youtube and see some examples.
As virtual reality it is really easy to
understand. Imagine seeing the world of “warcraft”, “call of duty” as if you
are really there. Notice the zombie and the desert well that is what you see from your eyes in virtual reality. In short you are cut of from the real world and you can only
see the virtual world. Through this technology you can go to a dinosaur
infested island from the comfort of your house. One significance of virtual
reality is that you must have a headset or goggles to experience it.
You
can watch the trailers of Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Playstation VR
Now if you understand what is virtual reality (VR) and what is augmented reality (AR) the difference must be clear. If you still have any problems feel free to leave a comment.
